White people with dreadlocks are stealing our culture
Cultural appropriation, white privilege, reverse racism. These are some of the terms you may have heard, especially if you are white with dreadlocks. What should we give reasonable consideration to or is it just another form of racism? ...read more below!
There has been a recent attack from some 2000+ people from a facebook group dedicated to attacking white people with dreadlocks. This is a result of a series of racially charged attacks suggesting 'Cultural Appropriation'. Attackers targeting business pages have been leaving fake reviews in an attempt to destroy business reputations. Despite several of these businesses notifying facebook of the attacks, facbook has taken no action. "This effects all business pages on facebook, not just dreadlock businesses".
We contacted a number of the attackers places of work listed on facebook. None of which happen to be in work or any kind of employment. As the jobless continue to attack hard working and positive contributors to society, Will this spell the end of facebooks review system?
Gareth Buxton, 31 from stowmarket writes "I feel let down by facebook. I work hard, pay my taxes and now i fear i may loose a lot of trade because of these mindless attacks"
You may remember huffington posts - 'Marc Jacobs article', 'Black woman attacks white man over cultural appropriation' or the broader veriety of cultural appropriation in fashionista's - the good the bad and the offensive. Even Justin Beiber's dreadlocks made an appearance!
What is Cultural Appropriation?
The issue of cultural appropriation is that elements of a culture are copied from a minority culture by members of the dominant culture, and these elements are used outside of their original cultural context, often, the original meaning of these cultural elements is lost or distorted.
What they don't seem to recognize is that dreadlocks have a worldwide heritage. A rich history spanning the globe! Mummies in Peru and Egypt have been found with dreadlocks. The sadhus of India are recognized as the inspiration for the rastafarian adoption of dreadlocks. Also, ancient Greece, the Vikings and the polish plait have their rich history. Did you know that even old English folklore has its roots? In Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet, he refers to 'Elflocks'.
What we should note is that America has its own cultural narrative of the black struggle against their white oppressors. Dreadlocks may have symbolized that in America. But equally, they cannot expect the rest of the world to give up their own cultures and heritage over American issues. They are attacking businesses in other countries.
What is White Privilege?
The issue is that societal privileges benefit people identified as white in western countries, as the majority population. Any one can understand that being in a majority, in any context would afford certain privileges, simply by virtue of being in the majority. With high racial tension in America, the term is often used by an offended party, requesting an individual to 'check their privilege'.
What they don't seem to recognize is that modern history in western culture, dreadlocks have most typically been associated with the homeless or hippy communities. People would assume the wearer to be dirty, smelly and of poor personal hygiene. This is regardless of skin colour. Being of white skin offers no privilege whatsoever where dreadlocks are concerned.
What we should note is that the American media personality have recently been pulled up on having double standards. The case of Zendaya's dreadlocks at the oscars. American politics need to remain American politics. Making this distinction between American politics ad the rest of the world might help.
